Buying Used? Here Are The Must Dos!

It is important to be an informed consumer when purchasing a used semi truck.

A cheap semi may be the perfect way for a new owner-operator to break into the trucking business without having to spend a fortune on a new truck. Although it is absolutely possible to purchase a reliable used truck, we have all heard the horror stories. As with any used purchase, most of the risk can be eliminated by being a diligent consumer. Read on to learn about some of the things that every trucker should consider before driving away in a used semi.

Examine Used Truck:

Inspect the outside of the truck to make sure that there are no major damages. Be sure to keep your expectations realistic though. This is a used semi-truck, so you should expect to see a few minor dings and scratches.

Rust:

Be sure to check all exterior surfaces for rust. Look around the door frames and underneath the truck for structural rust. Also check for raised spots under paint where rust is present but has not been removed. This will need to be addressed in order to extend the life of the equipment.

When inspecting the truck, check for rust on the body.
Examine the truck for rust carefully. Look for bubbles in the paint where the rust needs to be removed.

Go on a Test Drive:

It typically isn’t wise to purchase a used truck without taking it on a test drive first. Test driving the truck will give you a general idea about how well the equipment runs. Pay close attention to the acceleration, breaks, and overall feel of the truck. Also listen for any peculiar sounds or signals that could indicate mechanical issues. While you are in the truck also take a moment to inspect the interior. Make sure that the interior is in good condition overall and will suit your needs.

It is always a good idea to test drive a semi before committing to it.

Check the Tires:

Taking a moment to look over the tires will pay off in the end. Consider if the tread looks good, whether or not the tires all match, and ask if they have been rotated properly. If the tires do need to be replaced then just make sure that the price of the truck reflects this additional cost. Some dealerships can replace tires on site upon request for an additional fee.

Mileage Matters:

Don’t be scared off by a high odometer reading. Understand that if a truck has been properly maintained, it can last a very long time. Engine rebuilds are expensive and can cost around $10,000.00 but they are necessary in extending the life of your equipment. Some trucks need rebuilt after 500,000 miles while others can run up to 1,000,000 miles before needing rebuilt. Do some research on your truck to see when this will need done. We recommend putting money aside regularly to account for maintenance expenses down the road. Save up a healthy nest egg so that large repair bills do not devastate your business.

Warranty:

A used truck can be expensive to repair, so make sure that you understand the warranty on the truck if one is offered to you. Some trucks come with factory warranties, but just make sure that you know the date that it ends. Make sure that you pay close attention to the list of covered components, the deductible amount per claim, maintenance requirements, and what to do in the event of a breakdown. If a dealer isn’t willing to answer your questions, then you should be weary. Finally, keep in mind that you can always shop around for warranties or extend them if you need to.
